International Art Center
Gallery
Gabryel
Harrison 60 x 60 cm Canvases
now Available www.internationalartcentre.co.nz
It is our pleasure to offer
enchanting small canvases
by Vancouver based Gabryel
Harrison. This new series
has a luscious, vibrant new
pallet and will be on view
from Thursday 22nd September.
We look forward to seeing
you
here in the gallery.
Working
in translucent layers
of oil paint,
the artist
sometimes incorporates
crushed rose petals
or other organic
or inorganic matter
that becomes a physical carrier
of meaning and memory.
Gold leaf is occasionally
used
in symbolic reference
to the transmutation of
human
consciousness, the
objective of spiritual alchemy.
The
artist also explores
text, including the physical
meditation of inscribing
words, phrases
and marks into the
surface
of her paintings. The
gesture
reinforces her philosophy
that words, and the
imaginative impulse
behind them,
have the power to transform
reality. The physical
acts of painting
and of writing is the
artist's
self-abandonment to
the challenge of life's
ambiguities, her
pleasures, her melancholy,
her tenderness and her
joys.

International Art Centre:
Fleurs
About
the Exhibition
What could be more joyful
than an exhibition celebrating
one of Mother Natures'
greatest gifts, flowers.
Floral abundance
has long been a theme beloved
by artists. Ancient civilizations
used floral motifs as adornment.
Floral symbolism played
an important part in early
religious
art, whilst by the 1400's
Northern European artists
were refining the genre
of still life painting.
Today,
works by Patricia Payne
and Marietta embody these
historical
artistic traditions.
It is with great pleasure,
excitement and enthusiasim
that we welcome Canadian
based Gabryel Harrison
to International Art Centre.
Born in Tauranga, Gabryel
completed her Fine Arts
Degree
at the University of Ottawa
in 1980 and has since painted
and exhibited in Vancouver.
In closing, I wish to extend
sincere thanks to these
gifted and artists and
the wonderful
International Art Centre
team who have so ably assisted
with curating this special
exhibition. As we celebrate
40 fabulous years in business
warmest wishes and thanks
to you, our valued friends
and clients.

The Province: Painting
poetry into her work
BY HANS ONGSANSOY
Once upon a time, this writer was invited to visit artist Gabryel Harrison's
studio in the Southlands area of the city.
To have that opportunity with any artist is a cherished one, a chance to
experience the environment that directly informs the creative experience.
Alas, it's a visit that has yet to be paid.
Luckily, there is our feature Portraits of an Artist, a weekly chat with
an artist who has a current exhibit in town. Harrison has such a show.
It's titled All the Things I Never Said and opens tonight at the Winsor
Gallery (3025 Granville St.)...

November
4 - 27
Sensuous
and richly textured, the
mixed-media paintings of
New Zealand–born Vancouver
artist and poet Gabryel Harrison,
exhibited at the Winsor Gallery
from Thursday (November 4)
to November 27, beg to be
touched. In eight of the
16 pieces on display, Harrison
had her poetry translated
into Braille, which she then
applied to panels and covered
with gold leaf, giving the
work added meaning hidden
in plain view. For her piece
Spill 1 (Agamemnon Channel)
(seen above), Harrison applied
gold leaf and bitumen to
a marine chart, sounding
a message as clear as a scream.
A video piece and a sound
sculpture round out the exhibition,
which also features the artist’s
deep-hued floral oil paintings...

leather pants
BY MICHAEL KISSINGER Gabryel
Harrison's latest exhibition,
All The Things I Never Said,
is a series of mixed-media
paintings incorporating Braille,
which the poet and painter
succinctly says is about sex,
death and money. The former
New Zealander took time from
her busy schedule to discuss
love, language and subtle nuances
of wearing leather pants...

There'll be much worthwhile stuff to bid on when Alison Lawton chairs the
Unite With Art gala at the Rocky Mountaineer station June 21. The gala will
benefit UNICEF Canada's Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS campaign.
A preview ran at the Auto One dealership's Trunk Gallery Thursday, when
Trunk president Cecilia Jette and UWA executive director-curator Julie Lee
showed works by the gala's 40 contributing artists, including Michael Abraham,
Andrea Bax, Fred Herzog, Tiko Kerr and George Vergette.
Gabryel Harrison showed one of the $6,000 works she creates
by reproducing self-written poems in Braille, then layering them with gold
leaf and oil paint.

Media Coverage
by Mia Johnson
With her third solo exhibition at Jacana Gallery in so many years, Vancouver
artist Gabryel Harrison delivers another passionate and edgy body of work.
In some of the finest and most self–assured painting in Vancouver,
Harrison plumbs the essence of blood–red and labia–pink flowers
in dripping and tumbling compositions of blossoms and buds. Her search
for what she describes as “the pain and passion...the struggle and
the ultimate surrender...of our own existence” is palpable, as if
she has plunged her hands into the darkness of entrails and wrenched flowers
forward onto the picture plane. continue
